About This Trek / Tour

Kathmandu Valley is one of the most culturally rich and historically dense places on earth. Within just a few kilometres, you can visit seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, more than 2,700 religious shrines, medieval Newari palace squares and living goddess temples — all within one of Asia's most vibrant and ancient urban landscapes.

This 4-day sightseeing tour covers the valley's major highlights methodically, giving you time to truly absorb each site rather than rushing through. Your expert guide brings history and mythology to life at every stop. The tour ends with a sunrise at Nagarkot (2,175m) — a Himalayan viewpoint offering one of the widest panoramas of the mountain ranges from Dhaulagiri to Kanchenjunga.

Heritage Note: Kathmandu Valley contains 7 of Nepal's 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This tour visits all seven. Entry fees are included in the package price.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in Thamel, Kathmandu's tourist and backpacker hub. Afternoon orientation walk through Thamel's labyrinthine lanes — a colourful mix of trekking gear shops, thangka galleries, spice stalls and tea houses. Visit Kathmandu Durbar Square (Hanuman Dhoka) — the ancient royal palace complex with the Kumari Ghar (house of the Living Goddess), Taleju Temple and Kasthamandap (the building that gave Kathmandu its name). Evening welcome dinner. Overnight Kathmandu.

Full day at the valley's greatest sacred sites. Morning at Pashupatinath Temple (1,400m) — the most sacred Hindu temple in Nepal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the banks of the Bagmati River. Watch sadhus (holy men), morning rituals and the famous ghats (riverbank cremation sites) as pilgrims gather from across South Asia. Continue to Boudhanath Stupa (1,400m) — one of the world's largest Buddhist stupas, the all-seeing eyes of Buddha watching from the golden spire. Walk the kora, spin prayer wheels, visit a Tibetan thangka studio. Afternoon at Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple, 1,336m) — climb 365 steps through chattering monkeys to this 2,500-year-old hilltop stupa with panoramic Kathmandu Valley views. Overnight Kathmandu.

A day dedicated to the medieval splendour of the valley's ancient cities. Morning at Patan Durbar Square (1,400m) in Lalitpur — considered the finest example of Newari medieval architecture in Nepal. Visit the exquisite Krishna Mandir (Krishna Temple, 1636 AD), Hiranya Varna Mahavihara (Golden Temple), Patan Museum and the busy artisan market. Afternoon at Bhaktapur Durbar Square (1,401m) — Nepal's most intact medieval city, a UNESCO site with the 55-window palace, Nyatapola Temple, pottery square and peacock window. Late afternoon visit to Changu Narayan Temple (1,531m) — Nepal's oldest temple (4th century), perched on a forested ridge with impressive stone sculptures and valley views. Overnight Kathmandu.

Pre-dawn transfer to Nagarkot (2,175m) — the highest and most famous viewpoint in the Kathmandu Valley. On clear mornings, the panoramic sunrise view stretches from Dhaulagiri (8,167m) in the west to Kanchenjunga (8,586m) in the east — including Everest, Cho Oyu, Langtang, Ganesh Himal and many more peaks. Return down through the terraced hills to visit Bungamati Village — a traditional Newari village famous for woodcarving and the half-year residence of the Rato Machendranath chariot deity. Return to Kathmandu for hotel checkout and airport transfer. End of Kathmandu Valley Tour.

Practical Travel Tips

Dress Code: Many Hindu and Buddhist sites require modest dress — shoulders and knees should be covered. Carry a light scarf or shawl. Remove shoes when entering temples (our guide will remind you).

Best Time for Nagarkot: October–December offers the clearest Himalayan panoramas. Arrive at Nagarkot by 5:30am. If cloud cover is thick, the guide will advise — we can schedule an alternative morning activity instead.

Photography: Kathmandu Valley is an extraordinary photography destination. Avoid photographing cremation ceremonies at Pashupatinath out of respect. Our guide will advise on respectful photo etiquette at each site.

Combine with Trekking: This tour is the perfect preparation for any Nepal trek — you will already know Kathmandu well before your trek begins, making the most of your time in the city. Popular combinations: Kathmandu Valley Tour + Poon Hill Trek or Langtang Valley Trek.
